Cleaning Out My Wallet

I’m throwing away, finally, the senior picture of my ex-girlfriend, wrinkled at the corners. And smudged with fingertip kisses. I’m spending the silver dollar dated 1962 because now is the time for change. The phone numbers scribbled on strips of paper, like post-it notes in a book marking memorable passages to revisit, will be programmed into my cell phone. I’m getting responsible and adding an emergency contact card---you, my mother, Papa John’s. I’m shredding the JC Penny and Capital One credit cards I received when I turned 18, neither activated in the past 3 years. I will carry cash, as soon as I can get some. Business cards will be kept for my next oil change or first home improvement need. And from behind the plastic and the paper, I will unfold the picture of my family—Mom, Dad, kid brother, me—arms waving, victorious, before the crash.
