There is no break in winter

My subscription, though a requested past Christmas present (thank you, now in-laws!), is almost over, thankfully. I did not know what I was getting myself into when I asked for it. Now, I have a pile of magazines, with some enjoyable cartoons, a few good poems (see below), and an enjoyable short story or two. Otherwise, it was a bust.

The new issue, received two days ago, surprised me. Last night, I read the poem "From the Lives of My Friends" by Michael Dickman. Then, I immediately read it to my wife. Today, I have read it again...twice. I don't know if I'm still in the "zone" from last night's Motini's reading, but I think this might be one of my favorite poems I have read in a long time. (A Denise Duhamel poem comes to mind as well.) Tell me I'm crazy.

Also, there is a David Foster Wallacepiece of fiction. I just read it, fresh in my mind. I thought it was a fun read, several interesting questions posed. I think I'm going to read The Broom of the System over break.

I also finished Vacation by Deb Olin Unferth this morning. Wow, I thought the book ruled. I love the tone, very much like her short short fiction. I especially enjoyed the ever-changing narrator. Not to mention, the book is gorgeous.

I'm excited to read over break. Like I said, I hope to read me some DFW. Also, I'll probably re-read A Heart-Breaking Work of Staggering Genius by Eggers. In terms of poetry, For the Confederate Undead by Kevin Young and New And Collected Poems by John Foulcher (a much anticipated re-read!) are on the list. Now, I might have to find me some Michael Dickman to read.
